Universitaet Duisburg-Essen

Short description of the organisation

The “Networked Embedded Systems” (NES) group was founded in 2009 with the change in position of Pedro Marrón, the head of the group, from the University of Bonn to the University of Duisburg-Essen. Scientists at NES have worked on research and development projects for government agencies, associations and industry (Siemens) during their work at the University of Bonn and Fraunhofer IAIS. Examples of European projects, where current members of NES have worked on, are the Embedded WiSeNts coordination action, AWARE and EMMA. The goal of AWARE was to combine the capabilities of UAVs, robots, cameras and sensor networks to fight the spread of fire in indoor scenarios. Currently NES is participating as a founding member in the projects PECES and NOBEL, all of them funded by the EC. The members of NES have been and are currently responsible for the design and implementation of middleware solutions based in data-centric as well as publish/subscribe paradigms for both projects.

Additionally, Pedro Marrón is the coordinator of PLANET and CONET. PLANET is an Integrated Project dealing with the efficient deployment of large scale sensor networks in environmental monitoring scenarios and the latter is the Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence, composed of 11 universities and 5 major companies as founding members, and whose main goal is the establishment of a strong community in the area of Cooperating Objects capable of conducting the needed research needed to achieve, in the long-run, the vision of Mark Weiser for Ubiquitous Computing. The Research Roadmap on Cooperating Objects has been one of the major achievements of the two years in the project.

Role in the project and main tasks

In the EC-SAFEMOBIL Project, UDE will take care of the designing and implementing a safe, robust and real-time middleware that can be used in highly mobile environments. UDE will also participate in the implementation of the simulator as well as in the testing of the overall system. Regarding exploitation and dissemination, UDE will concentrate on academic activities such as the organization of a summer school or the assessment of best practices.
